Invictus

(1) The movie Invictus focused a lot on leadership skills and how an ethical leader should and should not act. One leadership value strongly stressed in the movie is that two wrongs don't make a right. Just because the Afrikaners treated the black people of South Africa poorly doesn't mean the black africans should return the favor by stripping away their identity. If so, the the black people would just become what the white Afrikaners had always feared. Mandela worked instead to try to bring the two groups together and unite them as one nation. Another value learned is to listen are try to make a compromise but also still strive and not loose sight of your goals. Throughout the movie Mandela was often met with conflict. He would listen and give reassurance that he had taken in what was just said, but he still pushed for what he believed in and did not let anyone distract him.

(2) A dilema that is often faced by many students at school is helping each other with homework. It's okay to work on assignments together but often times students are in a rush to get it done that they just ask instead to copy the work. Students have to make the decision of helping their friend but could get caught and be suspended, or they could resist letting their friend copy the work but risk having that friend angry at you. Another dilemma is whether senior advisees to freshman students do about them coming to them about drinking alcohol or doing drugs. They could either not tell the school and maintain that trust with the freshman but the freshman could have problems with substances later. On the other hand they could tell the school and have the problem taken care of but the senior would loose that trust with the freshman. The final example of a dilemma I have is cheating on a test. Imagine you get bad grades but try really hard. This test coming up could be your last chance to pass the class. If you pass this test everyone including yourself would be proud of you. If you choose to cheat on the test and don't get caught everyone would be proud of you but you would always live with that guilt inside of you. If you cheat on the test and do get caught then thats even worse than failing. If you don't cheat and try your hardest but still fail, you at least know you gave it all that you could.
