Ethical Leadership and Necessary Evils

I believe that it is not possible to be an effective leader and also be ethically good. No person can always make ethically good decisions and also lead a group of people at the same time. In order to be a leader, you need to be a little flexible with some of your ethical values. If something is completely against your morals and values then obviously make the ethical decision, only some flexibility is required. When it is border line on your values choose what will help better the situation. Be sure to think about the peoples' betterment. A personally example is at my school there are senior advisors to the new freshman. Freshman often talk to the seniors about drugs and alcohol and the seniors were at first unsure if they should tell the school. Instead they thought it would be good for the freshman to have someone they can talk to and trust. So the seniors kept it confidential, but advised them to make the right decisions. Another example of this is FDR with his New Deal proposal. Many of his proposals were at first not passed by the court. FDR then threatened to add new judges. With this threat, FDR is breaking the checks and balances system that the country is based on, but he knows the deals would better the people and help to arise from the depression. I believe that this was the right call to make. The great depression was a time like nothing else America had every experienced. FDR needed to stop the situation and he had to make drastic decisions to do so. A personally example is at my school there are senior advisors to the new freshman.
