In the school that I had been attending until just recently, Westford Academy, we have a very rough speech and debate team. When I say “rough” I mean to say that it is somewhat disorganized and lacking guidance/ support from the school itself. Most clubs in our school have a teacher advisor, and any other team that competes with other schools is funded by the school, provided buses and whatnot. Speech and Debate is not like the other sports teams, but we are still a competitive team. However we have no funding or a teacher advisor, therefore the captain of the team has to be able to compensate and guide us where the school doesn’t. Our Speech and Debate captain, Chris Zhang, is a very capable leader and an incredible charismatic speaker. Chris has many of the leadership qualities that we had up on the board earlier today. He is confident, intelligent, a great public speaker, and unafraid to take action. Though he may be occasionally arrogant, he is very efficient and able to get the job done. Because we have no funding from the school, money is a particularly tedious topic to deal with. So as the captain, Chris is faced with the challenge of pushing the members to pay fees and if they don’t, then he is the one who has to force them to drop out. This task of being the strict enforcer is no doubt a painful one. All in all though, Chris is a great leader and a pretty cool guy.
