More than a role model, a leader must possess the capability to
epitomize the leadership qualities of magnanimity, enthusiasm, connectivity,
and most importantly, integrity. A leader is not mere authority, rather an
individual who humbles himself/herself with the community in order to create
inspiration and prompt other students to become leaders as well. The most
essential element a student leader could contribute to the progress and
development in a school is the receptiveness he/she conveys, in the sense that
the student is readily willing and open to other’s distinct notions and advice.
Through such manner, one is able to prove oneself trustworthy and approachable,
unlike the antiquated intuition that a leader should encompass authoritative
intimidation to gain respect. Aside from forming a bond with the students in
the school, a student leader should likewise be capable of forming a
professional bond with the faculty and seek solutions to ensure improvement in
the school.
More than simply
assuring confidence within the individual, leadership also assures confidence
in the surrounding community, for it provides a sense of identity and security.
The presence of a leader motivates others, which in turn creates a subtle
domino effect, forging new leaders that can successively inspire other members
in their community. The title of “leader” itself does not, however, justify a
means to inspire. The significance of a student leader lies in the manner in
which he/she carries out goals and compromises; through complying communication,
persistent determination, unblemished honesty, and uniform respect.
A member of the Gwinnett Student Leadership Team, Anthony Downer personally inspires me and many other students, emulating such essential leadership qualities. One of the first ethical dilemmas he faced occurred when another of the GSLT members was behaving inappropriately on a social media site, such as excessively using profanity, and he had to make the decision of dismissing her. Although they were close friends, Anthony ultimately decided that a member of GSLT should not exhibit such behavior, for it would give a misrepresentation of how GSLT members behave, and consequentially mislead others who look up to these GSLT individuals. This particular ethical dilemma exemplifies the significance of the responsibilities that come with assuming a leadership position. By harnessing the chief factors of a responsible leader, the influence and inspiration that accompanies a leader has the potential to catalyze a reaction from his/her peers. The spotlight follows the leader everywhere, even when he/she is offstage.
